The Worlds Top 5 Skiing Destinations

The Worlds Top 5 Skiing Destinations

Even though we are in the middle of summer, it is never to early to start thinking about the upcoming ski season. From beginner sledding to experienced heli-skiing, there are a number of places around the world where you can plan your next trip that might not be on your usual ski resort radar. Some of these places are in distant lands and offer world-class snow and terrain, with unique culture. So here is a list of some of the world’s bets skiing destinations.

1. The Monashees, British Columbia

It has been said that some of the best heli-skiing in the world can be found in British Columbia, especially in the Monashees. Here the terrain is famously “steep and deep,” getting about 66 feet of snow each season. Two-thirds of the runs here go right through old forest with well spaced trees, offering some spectacular terrain. On average, skiers who stay for about a week will descend at least 100,000 feet, so have fun.

2. The Andes, Chile

Every summer, it is getting more and more popular for skiers and boarders to head down to Chile for the southern hemisphere winter. The Central Andes have access to about 1,900 square miles of epic heli-skiing terrain. While the snow is more “light and dry,” it may not be what you are typically used to but worth the trip. The variety of the terrain alone (ridges, huge faces, steep couloirs, bowls, and volcanoes) is enough to create a one of a kind ski adventure that you will never forget.

3. The Alps, Europe

If you want to ski the Alps, you are gong to need to pick a country first, and you have the choice of France, Italy, or Switzerland. It is not uncommon to start you day off in France on one side of the Alps, and end up in Italy at the end of the day. Here your trip can become quite pricey because many ski destinations in Europe are quite ritzy and glamorous. Although all that flash that does not mean there isn’t any substance. The Alps offer some of the best terrain in the world, on and off piste.

4. Top to Bottom Skiing in Scotland

The Lecht, Cairngorm Mountain, and Glenshee are really the main ski areas in Scotland. The most entertaining thing to do there is the long-haul skiing with trails as long as 30 kilometers. Just don’t ware a kilt on the mountain.

5. Himalayan Skiing in Glumarg, India

Just going and seeing the Himalayan mountains is awe inspiring and amazing, but getting the opportunity to go heli-skiing on them is truly once in a lifetime. Glumarg was named the 7th best ski destination in Asia, regardless if it was one a war torn area. Here you can find the highest ski lift in the world and experience a new culture that is really unique.

Mysterious Road in Jeju

Mysterious road or Sinbiui Doro in Korean, also called a Ghost Road is one of the place that I can recommend you to visit in order to find out what is really happening once you get here. It's really a mysterious place. As you see, the road is going down a few meters away to sinbiye doro.

Here's the location where you can experience how mysterious the road is but first you have to go to straight a little bit more and make a u-turn. When you make a u-turn the road is going up. It's the opposite road of the bottom picture.

You will see this "Start Here" sign.

From the start sign, don't step on your car's acceleration and you'll experience the car moving. It is called a mysterious road because cars roll uphill with the engine turned off. As you go up, the car goes faster, too. You can also see people putting bottle on the road and the bottle roll up, too. Isn't it a mystery?

They say it's an optical illusion but still it's a best place to visit and have a great experience in driving to Korea.

Yongduam Rock

Yongduam is a basalt rock formation known as "Dragon Head Rock", is said to have once been a dragon that lived in the Dragon King's Palace beneath the sea, and in its desire to reach heaven, was turned into stone. The submerged body of this oddly shaped structure is the result of the solidification of flowing lava during a volcanic eruption and is about 30m long and its head rising about 10m above the sea.

Two legends exists as to the circumstances that led this dragon to meet its fate here by the sea. In one version, a dragon came to Mt. Halla as the emissary of the Dragon King to gather the elixir of youth. However, the other version asserts that a dragon that was ascending to heaven was said to have grabbed a sacred jade stone in its mouth which had belonged to the guardian of Mt. Halla. In either case, the legend purports that the guardian of Mt. Halla struck the dragon with an arrow causing it to fall into the sea, leaving only the head protruding above the water to eternally wail over its fate. If stared at steadily from about 100m to the west when the waves are moderately high, the dragon's head may seem to roar and sway.

To the east of Dragon Head Rock is Dragon Pool where, it is claimed, this dragon lived.

Located in Yongdam-dong, Jeju City, Yongduam is a rock formation on the shape of a dragon's head. The shape was formed when lava become solid while lava flowing out of a volcano two million years ago. The rock with 10m in height and 30m in length is a local natural culture property. And it's academic value in geology is highly recognized.

Yongduam, a rock showing a writhing dragon with a grudge. According to the legend, a dragon living in the Dragon Kingdom wanted to ascend to heaven, but it wasn't an easy thing to do. Realizing that he could be a real dragon with a precious pearl of the mountain god of Halla, the dragon stole the precious pearl from the god and successfully descended to the valley of Yongyeon. However, he was discovered and shot by the god's arrow while flying. He landed on the beach where he turned into a petrified stone, crying and wreathing with agony and a grudge. Yongduam itself shows a roaring dragon which is about to ascend from the sea. When the day is windy and waves are strong, it will make you feel like a dragon is going spiraling up to the sky. With 30 meters of the body submerged, the 10-meter high tall rock will cast a spell if you steadily gaze it at sunset. The 100-meter point from the rock is one of the best distances if you really want to appreciate Yongduam Rock. In particular, when the waves are splashing, it is the day to watch this rock. It will make you think the world is turning upside down or the dragon is about to rise from the sea, making a roaring sound under the wrath of a god. Located 200-meters south of Yongyeon at Hancheon River, Yongduam is a well-known symbol of Jeju tourism. It attracts a lot of tourists who want to see the shape of the rock.

You'll see some hajuma vendors selling seafoods. It's a kind of restaurant near the sea.

There are lots of customers having seafoods and drinking soju.

Look at the restaurant, isn't it cute? hihi..

Gwagji Olle Gil

There are lots of olle gil or " walking courses" in Jeju and one of the best known walking courses is the Gwagji Olle Gil. Olle Gil means "narrow road" and there are lots of famous olle gil or walking routes in Jeju.

Most of the Olle Gil that I've been to here in Jeju are mountains and Gwagji Olle Gil is a unique one because it is a walking route beside the sea or beaches. If you love beaches, this place is good for you.

You can walk along the beach.

It's so relaxing to watch the seawaves while taking a walk. Or you can just sit down on the rocks or shades near the beach if you want to take a rest or watch the seawaves.

There are also lots of photographs of the rocks and flowers. Under the photographs are the names or what the rocks look like. You can't notice what the rocks look like but after looking at the photograph and reading what is written under, you will be surprised that it's really look like one. Ex. hippo or rhino rock shapes.

It takes about 2 hours to go back and forth but you can't notice that you already walk that long because you can't realize the time and you won't never feel bored or tired.

Jeju Mango Farm

It's too surprising to see mango trees in Korea. I thought mangoes don't grow in Korea but they do in Jejudo. We were on our way to Mt. Songaksan when we saw a signboard going to mango tree farm. I was curious and besides I was craving for mangoes so I told hubby to visit the farm and buy some.

There was a kind of storage room near the parking lot and as soon as we got off the car, a woman met us and led us to the room where they sell mangoes. They don't sell retail. They sell 50,000won (around $50 ) per box. I would buy if they sell in retail. Ten pieces are too much for me because my hubby don't eat this kind of mangoes. He likes the yellow or riped ones.

We asked if we could see the mangoe trees and she led us to the farm. Wow~ look at them! The trees are not tall enough but they have lots of mangoes in their branches. They look amazing for me because I grew up in a country where there are lots of mangoes but it's my first time to see this kind of mango trees. And the fruits are also different. They are so big but still hard. They called them apple mangoes here in Jejudo but in my country they are far different from apple mangoes. What I knew is, apple mangoes are small and round.

Too bad because I didn't buy any. If they could just sell a piece or two or three, I surely bought some.

Yongmeori

Yongmeori is the oldest volcanic crater in Jeju Island. It is a tuff ring produced by hydrovolcanic activity upon the continental shelf long before the formation of the Mt. Hallasan and the lava plateau. It thus form upon the friable continental shelf sediment and underwent collapse of the volcanic edifice a few times during the eruption. As a result, the location of the vent shifted a few times and the rim deposits of the tuff ring were transported from different directions. The Yongmeori tuff ring consists of three stratal packages that are bounded by a large truncation surface or an extensive erosion surface. These surfaces are interpreted to have resulted from large-scale volcano collapse and erosional events during the eruption of Yongmeori.

Yong means "dragon" and meori means "head", so Yongmeori means dragon's head. I don't know where it got its name but it is said that the beach looks as if a dragon's head is going underwater. Yongmeori Coast is a place in Jejudo where Mt. Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean.

There is an admission fee of 2,500won but free for Jejudo's residents.

There are many crabs. They are so cute but a little bit scary because I was afraid that they would pinch me.

There are also hajumas selling seafoods and soju (korean alcohol) by the sea. I saw some couples who were sitting down near the coast eating seafoods and soju. You can also see some people fishing with soju and chogochujang and they eat immediately the fish that they've caught.

Hamel Ship

Hamel ship is a replica ship named after Hendrick Hamel, the first Westerner to write about Korea in 1666. Hendrick Hamel from the Netherlands was shipwrecked Daejeong-hyeon on the 16th of August in 1653 on the way to Nagasaki Japan from Taiwan on Sperwer due to the fierce weather with 36 survivors. Since then, he spent 13 years in Korea. When he returned to his own country, his journal, the first record about Korea was published. This ship Hamel was reproduced the shipwrecked Sperwer to exhibit the related materials in it, and it was opened to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Hamel's shipwreck.

Its size has the full length of 36.6m width of 7.8m, height of 11m (mast height of 32m). The model of the ship is the replica of Batabia of 17th century (in Netherlands).

There is a sculpture of Hamel sitting on the bench. There are also books and some part of the Hamel story has been translated into Korean, but most of the documents are translated from 17th century Dutch into English. Inside the ship, you'll see how the sailors lived in the ship.

Mt. Songaksan

Unlike other volcanoes, Mt. Songaksan is unusual in that it has numerous peaks and parasitic cones. The main cone rises 104m above sea level. The crater is 500m in circumference and 80m deep and still contains dark-red volcanic ash. The northwest side of the main cone is covered with a lush field of grass, and two parasitic cones can be seen there. There are several man-made caves along the coastal cliff that had been built by the Japanese army during the Japanese occupation, reminding the Koreans to this day of the tragedy of the Japanese invasion of Korea.

This military facility was built by the Japanese for suicide attacks using small ships against the fleet of the allied forces when they faced defeat in the Pacific War. It comprises 17 caves along the coastal cliffs of Mt. Songaksan on the southeastern side of Jeju, in linear, H-shape, or open-ended square formation. Built into the cliffs by the forced labor of Jeju residents, this facility not only speaks vividly of Japanese invasion but also demonstrates the cruelties of war in which soldiers are forced to die.

Kids can enjoy the horse-riding.

You can climb up using the stairs from the sea.

You can't only enjoy taking a walk on a wonderful view but also do some exercise using machines.

The water is so clear that you can view some sea creatures even when you're above the volcano.

View while taking a walk.

It's hard to imagine that the water can reach on top of the mountain.

The famous drama Daejanggeum "Jewel of Palace" was filmed here.
